Sustainable Living & Renewable Energy Project

Discover the idyllic Harmless House. A haven for kayaking & biking enthusiasts amidst Carron Valley's stunning panorama

Located in the picturesque Carron Valley, near the reservoir and forestry, lies The Harmless House, offering ample opportunities for kayaking and biking enthusiasts. Positioned on the western edge of a small cluster of houses, the property boasts breathtaking long-range views across the valley to Meiklebin.

Project Requirements

Revolutionary home design: combining dementia-friendly living, eco-friendly materials, and versatile spaces for work and play

Designing the house posed a few critical considerations, primarily ensuring that the property catered to those who are dementia and ageing without appearing institutional.

Furthermore, the construction and finishing materials had to be resilient, natural, healthy and non-toxic, while offering a large and flexible studio/work space for storage, bike and motorbike repairs, and homeworking.

Additionally, the house should provide flexible sleeping spaces for visitors.

Achieving our client objectives

Eco-conscious dream home harnessing solar power and advanced insulation for sustainable living and electric vehicle charging

To achieve these objectives, the property was developed using a "fabric first" approach, featuring a deep timber frame and high levels of warmcell /cellulose insulation.

To maximize solar gain and offer sheltered external spaces, the project was oriented carefully. The house is heated using an air source heat pump, while PVs located on the studio/pend building generate electricity to power the client's two electric cars and the house.

A fusion of nature, innovation, and inclusive living

Final thoughts, The Harmless House project was an absolute joy to work on in a stunning location that perfectly combines accessibility to outdoor recreational activities with state-of-the-art design features. It is a robust and natural space that provides a comfortable environment for people of all ages, including those with dementia or ageing.
